The University and its many colleges dominate the city centre with cobbled courts, chapels, gardens and bridges,
but Cambridge is also a busy modern city with modern architecture too. The City Centre and Bus Station are about
1 mile from the Rail Station, but there are frequent buses from the Rail Station.

40 acres of gardens and glasshouses designed for year-round interest and
containing over 8000 plant species. Features include a Rock Garden with alpine

Fitzwilliam Museum - Trumpington Street
One of Britain's earliest public art museums, opened in 1848.
The collections include Western European paintings from the 14th century to

King's College Chapel - Kings Parade
King's College was founded by Henry VI in 1441 and the Chapel is an important example of perpendicular
(late gothic) architecture. It is a working College so the Chapel is the only building open to the public.
The famous service of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols has been broadcast from the Chapel since 1928.

A social history museum housed in a 16th century timber-framed building, formerly
the White Horse Inn. Exhibits illustrate the work and everyday life of local
people over the last 300 years, including a 19th century kitchen, toys and games,
City and University life, the Fens and local folklore. Displays cover local trades
such as brickmaking, basket-weaving, chemist, barber, chimney-sweep and thatcher.

The museum is based in the original sewage pumping station for Cambridge

Duxford Imperial War Museum - by bus
A former Royal Air Force base with many original buildings, contemporary exhibitions and a
fully operational airfield, Duxford is Europe's leading aviation museum. Aircraft include the
Spitfire and the huge B-52 Stratofortress. AirSpace tells the story of British and Commonwealth
aviation. Other exhibits include a 1940s prefab home, a restored wartime Operations Room, tanks,

Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill NT - by bus
A Jacobean style house containing sumptuous furnishings, books, works of art and a collection of
clocks. The extensive formal and landscape gardens contain many pieces of classical sculpture.
Winter Garden, wildflower meadows and Wildlife Discovery area. The 18th century Lode Mill has been
restored to full working order (please see website for days of operation).

Denny Abbey (EH) and Farmland Museum - by bus
The Abbey was founded in 1159 by Benedictine monks. After the Dissolution it survived as a farmhouse
and it still features Norman interiors.
The Museum displays cover farming through the ages and the rural history of Cambridgeshire.
17th century stone barn, traditional cottage and fenman's hut. Workshops include a basket-maker and blacksmith.
