Winchelsea

East Sussex

Winchelsea map A small 13th century town carefully planned to replace the port washed away by a great storm in 1287. Winchelsea remains a peaceful collection of picturesque houses, more a village than a town. Visitors by train must walk ¾ mile (the last part steeply uphill) to enter through one of the ancient gates.
