Knebworth House, Gardens and Park - by taxi
Originally a Tudor manor house, Knebworth was transformed by the spectacular High Gothic decoration of the Victorian romantic novelist, Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Objects on display reflect the family's Vice Regal time in India and visits by characters such as Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and Noel Gallagher. The formal gardens surrounding the house include a Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden and a maze. The Wilderness Garden includes life-size replica dinosaurs. Extensive parkland, adventure playground and miniature railway. Tearoom. Tel. 01438 812661.

Taxi: There is a taxi rank at Stevenage station. Walking (about 2½ miles) is not recommended because part of the route is beside busy roads and it involves crossing at a motorway junction roundabout.
