Visit by Train

A station-by-station guide to south east England and Norfolk

Introduction

The purpose of this website is to encourage greater use of public transport for leisure travel. Most people realise that attractions in towns and cities are easy to visit by train, but many assume that attractions in rural areas are too difficult to reach by train. In fact there are many places with a station within walking distance, or with a bus service from a station.

The main problem facing the potential visitor is finding the detailed information needed to plan a successful visit, such as the distance of the attraction from the station, the route to walk and the availability of local bus services. The internet has made it much easier to obtain train and bus times so I hope this website will help you fill in the remaining details you need to Visit by Train.

Each attraction is described briefly with approximate opening times. A telephone number and website link (where available) are provided to confirm details. You can look for an attraction, with special pages for National Trust and English Heritage properties. If you are considering a day out but are not sure where to visit you may prefer to start by looking at stations with direct train services from your local station.

The maps

Key to maps A map showing the route to walk from the station is given where required. Tourist Information Centres in towns are normally able to supply a printed street map, often free of charge.

Abbreviations used

M T W Th F S Su   for days of the week.
M-F   Monday-Friday.
M-S   Monday-Saturday.
BH   Bank Holiday Monday (public holiday).
NT   National Trust Property.
EH   English Heritage Property.
LDP   Long Distance Path.

Walking distance from the station

The distance given includes any walk through the grounds of the attraction. Distances in towns are not normally given unless they exceed 1 mile. Allow at least 5 minutes to walk each ¼ mile, more if you are not a brisk walker. Please take care when walking along country roads - keep to the right so as to face the oncoming traffic and cross to the outside of right-hand bends.

Opening times

Approximate opening dates and times are given for guidance, but the details may change so please telephone or follow the website link for the latest information. Opening times do not include a last admission time unless this is known to be more than 30 minutes before closing.

Underground, DLR and Tramlink

For the purpose of this station-by-station guide London Underground stations, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations and Croydon Tramlink stops are all treated as stations. To prevent confusion Underground, DLR or Tramlink are included with the station name if there is no National Rail service.
