Guildford Map A busy city on the River Wey with a steep High Street which retains its Georgian character. The modern Cathedral is set on a hill above the city, ¾ mile from the station.

Guildford Castle - Castle Street
An imposing stone tower keep containg an exhibition and situated in flower gardens. Tel. 01483 444715.
Open*: Grounds open daily. Conservation work on the keep was in progress during 2003, please telephone for opening arrangements.

Guildford Museum - Castle Arch, Quarry Street
Local history, Wealden ironwork, displays of needlework and items relating to Lewis Carroll. Admission free. Tel. 01483 444751.

Dapdune Wharf NT - ½ mile (or ¾ mile via towpath)
An award-winning visitor centre which tells the story of the River Wey and Godalming Navigations and the people who lived and worked on them. Boat trips available. Refreshments. Tel. 01483 561389.

Clandon map Clandon Park NT - by bus
A grand 18th century Palladian mansion. Collections of furniture, porcelain and pictures. The gardens contain a grotto, sunken Dutch garden and a Maori meeting house. Restaurant. Tel. 01483 222482.
The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment Museum is based at Clandon Park and open on the same days 1200-1700.

Hatchlands Park NT - by bus
An 18th century mansion with interiors by Robert Adam, set in parkland landscaped by Repton. On display is a large display of keyboard instruments. Small garden by Gertrude Jekyll. Restaurant. Pedestrians can approach Hatchlands Park through East Clandon village, there is no need to walk via the A246 to the main entrance. Tel. 01483 222482.

Wisley Garden - by bus
Extensive gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society covering a wide variety of styles from ornamental to fruit and vegetable gardens. Restaurant, Coffee Shop and cafés. Picnic area near car park. Tel. 01483 224234.

Traveline tel. 0871 200 2233. The return bus stops opposite Wisley's entrance, please cross the busy and fast A3 with great care.

Painshill Park - by bus
An 18th century landscape garden with lake, gothic temple, ruined abbey, grotto and giant water wheel. Refreshments. Tel. 01932 868113.

Claremont Landscape Garden NT - by bus
One of the earliest surviving English landscape gardens, restored by the National Trust. Features include a lake, island, grotto, turf amphitheatre, viewpoints and vistas. Tearoom (closed Mon & Tue). Tel. 01372 467806.
